Limit and Open Shows – Sunday 15th June

Open Show – Judge Julie Ann Gray (Aberstaff)

🥂

A massive thank you to everyone who gave me the honour of judging their very special Stafford’s today. My brain was truly exercised and some very close decisions had to be made.

❤️

My first breed club show was 11 years ago at the North Eastern SBT Club and to be invited again a bit more experienced and with a bit more knowledge was truly a blessing. I had previously decided it would be my swan song as I bowed out from judging.

However my mentors keep pushing me and today I stepped in that ring with absolute conviction and confidence, so if the JEP is what I have to do, I look forward to my three mentoring sessions.

😃

Thank you to the committee for all their hard work in making the show a success and thanks for the beautiful gift which now has a cheeky Malbec in it. I was a bit slower than normal judging due to a few health issues but I absolutely loved every second and I am super glad I was still standing at the end.

It was a smashing entry, cracking day so a huge thank you to each and every one of you for making it a day to remember and treasure.

Open Show 15th June 2025

The weather was kind, the grass was short, the ring size was a real treat – well done to the committee and officers for running not one but two shows on the same day.

Thanks to my very able stewards Tom Hall and Nicky Mason who kept things running smoothly and handed out a wonderful array of prizes to the winners of classes and the main winners.

Thanks to every exhibitor who gave me the opportunity and honour of judging their dogs. As always you must exercise the grey matter when judging and you reward the dogs who in your mind meet the breed standard the closest and importantly have breed TYPE.

The breed standard states the SBT is “of great strength for his size” this is completely different to great size for strength and while we have the desired heights being relative to weight I am looking for a dog that is within the desired parameters – I felt some were just too much all over and that’s coming from someone who won’t penalise a top sized dog if it is balanced and without exaggeration. I was looking for a dog without exaggeration who looked like it was fit for function within the realms of what we can assess when judging. On the day someone said I favoured the terrier type, my response “I prefer the standard type, a blend of bull and terrier. “

The dogs coped better with the temperature than me, there were nares (nostrils) that were slightly stenotic but none of the dogs showed any discomfort or breathing issues on the day. Mouths were variable, I am not a tooth fairy – on the day there were deviations from a “perfect, regular and complete scissor bite,” they can also still do damage. However, as a breed we are in the position that misplaced canine teeth are a point of concern for special attention by judges and this is recorded at Championship Shows, it is up to each judge to rationalise the severity of the issue and for me it did alter some of my decisions.

Having pointed out the previous I felt that the standard of the entry was very good and with the youngsters coming up we are in a pretty good position moving forward, especially with the calibre of bitches, places will change many times, good luck to all.

Minor puppy dog (1)

1st Seymour’s THEE REAL SLIM SHADY Br & Wh Happy puppy who is just starting out in the show world. Strong head of good proportions, correct bite and premolars present. His cheek muscles are developing, his dark round eye and neat rose ear enhance his expression. He has a bit of growing to do obviously but he is clean around the muzzle and lip. He is eye catching with his white chest flash and he is well off for bone. He has strong legs, no weakness at the pastern and has the desired turnout at feet. He has length to rib, his brisket will develop and he has evidence of spring of rib (this is something that I feel needs to be considered as we have a few lacking in the rib department). His rear angulation marries with his front, his hams are developing, and he has a decent bend of stifle, carried his tail low on the move when it wasn’t wagging. Good luck with him. BEST PUPPY DOG AND BEST PUPPY IN SHOW. It was a close decision for best puppy and it came down to a little more fill under eye and breadth of muzzle.

Puppy Dog (4)

1st Martinez’s BULLBROTHERS THE NAVIGATOR Br & Wh Won over his kennel mate by virtue of more fluidity in movement and a bit more width to rear on the move. Topsize flashy puppy who is balanced. This lad is strong throughout from his head to his rear, thin, rose ears, dark round eye, open nares and a correct bite housing big teeth including premolars. He has forechest and spring of rib developing. He has a well bent stifle and holds his topline on the move. His feet will tighten with maturity and exercise. Very well handled as he is full of exuberance and loving life.

2nd Martinez’s BULLBROTHERS TIMELORD Fawn. It is years since I have seen this shade of fawn, his pigmentation is excellent, dark mask, dark eye rims and black on his gums. On closer inspection of his feet, you can see his toe tips are white. Strong dog throughout and he reminds me of staffords when I first started out. He has width to his chest and stands on strong, well boned legs. You have to remind yourself that this is a puppy as he is showing maturity that belies his age. He has a strong neck, spring of rib, depth of brisket, obvious tuck at loin and a very well-developed rear for a youngster.

3rd Walsh & Lloyd’s GEORDIESTOON DEFIANT BOY

Res Philips’ GEORDIESTOON AGAMEMNON

Junior Dog (4,1 abs)

1st Wilkie’s GEORDIESTAFF TOON ARMY Br & Wh Attractive colour. Handler needed a little bit of support and guidance but did a grand job. This dog’s head really appealed, strong muzzle, correct bite, distinct stop, dark eye and rose ears finished the picture then he smiled which was even better. Body is developing but the basics are there, well placed shoulder, depth of brisket, spring of rib coming along. On the move he showed he had reach and drive with adequate bend of stifle.

2nd McFadyen’s ARAIDH CAPTAIN CHAOS Br & Wh What a colour! It’s cosmetic but what a great variety of colour on display at this show. Topsize lad with plenty of substance who isn’t chaos at all. Strong head which his body is catching up with. His head is of good proportion, distinct stop, he has a blunt muzzle, he has open nares, his eyes are dark enough. He moved true fore and aft holding his topline.

3rd Philips’ GEORDIESTOON AGAMENON

Yearling Dog (5)

1st Duncan’s RHEBELSTAFF HUNKY DORY Bl Br Today this lad played the game and was seriously considered in the final line-up. He has considerable positive virtue and there is no doubt this lad is a male. You can see the effort that is put into this dog condition wise and his feet are nice and tight with short nails. He impressed me on the move, moving parallel with width at the rear showing well developed hams. He has a strong head, maybe more than I prefer but I couldn’t deny his qualities. Behind the collar matches the front, his head flows into a strong neck which then flows down to his shoulders , nothing looks out of place and that is what defines balance. He has depth of brisket, spring of rib but this lad is only a junior so I look forward to seeing the finished article.

2nd Heath’s JODELS KHALIF R & Wh A lot of similar attributes to first body wise and was also shown in excellent condition. Slightly less head than 1st with a bit more muzzle length and open nares. Strong, rich red with excellent pigmentation. He made his handler work hard to get the best out of him but you can see the love in his eyes for her as he goes where he fancies and she reels him in. He moved with drive and attitude. First and second were shorter caste than 3rd.

3rd Cushley’s BULLBROTHERS MONTECHRISTO

Res McFadyen’s ARAIDH CAPTAIN CHAOS

Novice Dog (3)

1st Wilkie’s GEORDIESTAFF TOON ARMY as per 1st Junior dog. Felt he had the edge on maturity and more balance at this point over 2nd and 3rd.

2nd Martinez’s BULLBROTHERS THE NAVIGATOR as per puppy dog.

3rd Walsh and Lloyd’s GEORDIESTOON DEFIANT BOY

Post Grad dog (4)

1st Bennett’s POWERPACK SINGULARITY Bl Br & Wh A standard sized dog without exaggeration who I have judged before. Today he was not in his normal condition – he was on the lean side. He is a really balanced dog with lots to like, the lady of the house had given his ear a nibble but we are fine with honourable scars. He has a head of good proportions with great expression, tight lips. He has a strong underjaw and his canines are well angled. He is a compact dog, with good tailset and his front and rear angulation marry – he moves with purpose. Coat was in cracking condition.

2nd Walbey’s TYNEVIEW RIZZIUS LUSSO Br & Wh I had previously given this lad best dog and to me he screams Stafford, today he was not in his previous condition and was another lean one, needs more covering to complete what is a very pleasing picture. He has matured since I last saw him and much of what I said then still applies. He has no exaggeration, is clean throughout and is very sound on the move. He has grown into his rose ears which are thin.

3rd Martinez’ BULLBROTHERS HOWAY THE LADS

Res Seaton’s COOLIO IN GANGSTERS PARADISE VON DER RENSTADT (IMP DEU)

Limit dog (4,1abs)

1st Thomas’ BIGGLESWICK MR TOM (AI) R & W I have judged this lad before and was delighted to get my hands on him again with a bit more maturity. There is so much to like in this dog. His colour is rich, his coat is short, close and has the correct texture, his pigmentation is dark. He presents a clean outline throughout; nothing is exaggerated on this dog who is standard size. His head has no excess flesh, is of good proportions and his expression enhanced by neat, rose ears. He has big teeth, housed in a correct bite. He is in good muscular condition, moved out well fore and aft with a level topline and carrying a rare thing – a well-set pump handle tail! He has a shapely outline, length to his rib and adequate spring, depth of brisket and has forechest, He was BEST DOG on overall balance but had to settle for RBIS & BOS due to my preference for the width of front on the bitch.

2nd Jamieson-Bramley’s TYNEVIEW ETNA NERO Br & Wh Litter brother to 2nd in post grad who has come on in terms of maturity since I last judged him. He is bigger all through than 1st and his beautiful brindle was shining in the sun. He has grown into his ears and they now frame a nice expression. His head is of good proportion, with distinct stop, developed cheek muscles and he has open nares. Body wise he is slightly longer caste, has spring of rib and depth to his brisket. He has a good bend of stifle. Moved well with reach and drive.

3rd Beckwith’s GINSTEAN GOOD LUCK CHARM

Open Dog

This class had me stopping just admiring the sheer masculinity and testosterone. I cannot remember ever having the privilege of having a sire in a class with his son and grandson to judge, it was something truly special.

1st Reynold’s CH NIATONA WRECK IT RALPH R & Wh This dog is deceiving he looks like there is much more of him than there actually is. His markings make for an extremely attractive picture. He is strong throughout but not overdone. His head is of good proportions and he has length to his muzzle. His coat is short, close and in cracking nick. Pigmentation is dark. My notes say what a back-end thumping, good tail set. Ribs and brisket wow. In fit condition. I can see why he is a Champion. He works at one with his handler and covers the ground with ease. RESERVE BEST DOG. Nit picking it came down to tightness of lip and ear carriage for best dog.

2nd William’s JODELS IMPACT R & Wh This dog is all Stafford and boy does he know it. He has made his mark on the breed and throughout the classes I picked out his progeny without knowing. That front construction – width, forechest, well laid back shoulder, strong legs, substance, no weakness at pastern, on his toes, slight turn out at feet – it’s an education. Classic head, with strength and length to muzzle, open nares and the jaw contains a full set of BIG teeth and premolars. He has spring of rib with length (no short sternums here), depth of brisket. He has a well developed back end, good rear angulation and moves true like he owns the place. On this occasion he had to give way to his son on a neater ear, winning over 3rd on maturity and more drive on the rear.

3rd Robinson & Robinson Cox’s HAMASON SWEET LITTLE MYSTERY JW Wh & Br

Res Howard’s MATRIXSTAFFS KNIGHT STAR JW Bl Br

Veteran dog (1)

1st Thomas’ BIGGLESWICK FUNKY DEVIL JW Wh & R This is a dog I really admired but until now never had the opportunity to judge. At 12 ½ he is still in good condition but beginning to show some age. He still has a strong head which has depth and width to his skull, distinct stop, good muzzle to skull ratio and no extra flesh. He has tight lips, cracking underjaw and has a correct bite. Rose ears and dark round eyes finish his expression. He is well off for bone, is compact and has a short, strong, muscular neck. His head is in balance with his body. Moved out well, with adequate front reach and drive from the rear (at his pace). I had no hesitation on awarding him BEST VETERAN on overall balance. I am delighted he was out for the day!

Minor puppy bitch (3)

1st Owen’s TAGSTANE AMBER WHISKY Br & Wh Beautiful shade of brindle. This bitch excelled on body which won her the class. She is well off for bone. Good front, no weakness at the pastern and has the desired turn out at feet. She has a well laid-back shoulder, depth of brisket, spring of rib, has definition at loin and hams are well developed for a puppy. She moved out well, holding her topline. She is in good puppy condition. Her coat condition is beautiful and it’s short and close. She has a stronger head than first and second, cheek muscles developing nicely and her dark round eye enhances her expression. She has thin rose ears.

2nd Southworth’s VALGLO TIGERLILY WITH STAFFMASTER Bl Br & Wh Had more length of muzzle than first and her head is well proportioned. Wide open nares, dark round eye which enhanced her expression, rose ears. She has a bit of daylight under her and will grow into herself, but she is just old enough to be shown with a day in hand. Stood on well boned legs, has some depth to her brisket and some spring to rib. Moved out well holding a level topline, she has an adequate bend of stifle.

3rd Jackson’s PENDLERROCKAZ TWINKLESHINE

Puppy bitch (5) I must give a mention to the junior handler in this class, such a great rapport with his puppy who he handled with confidence and sympathetically getting the best out of her especially on the move. Well done on all the obvious effort you have made in training.

1st Willets’ HAMASON HEARTS ON FIRE Wh & R These puppies were of a similar age but slight nuances in development. This bitch was shown in fit condition for a youngster. Her head is of good muzzle to skull ratio. Deep enough stop and I like her depth of skull, she is strong around the muzzle and is clean lipped. Dark pigmentation, open nares and a dark round eye just add to the overall package, her white side has dark pigmented eye rims. Body wise she stands on well boned legs, no weakness at pastern and the desired turn out at feet. Has forechest, depth of brisket and spring of rib (but there is more to come), she is defined at the loin, is balanced by a well-developed rear and she has a well bent stifle. Handled to advantage, she moved true front and rear. BEST PUPPY BITCH and RESERVE BEST PUPPY IN SHOW.

2nd Philips’ GEORDIESTOON QUEEN OF FURY Br & Wh Carrying a bit more weight than her peers but I don’t mind that after all she IS a puppy. A lovely expression on a well-proportioned head, dark round eye and rose ears. She has a muscular neck, behind the collar she has a shapely body developing, depth of brisket and spring of rib. She has length to her rib. Good rear angulation and has some muscular development on her hams. Moved parallel maintaining her topline.

3rd Martinez’ BULLBROTHERS BLACK OIL

Res Martinez’ BULLBROTHERS NORTHERN STAR

Junior Bitch (10)

This was a cracker of a class, there is going to be some competition ahead with these ladies.

1st Addison HAMMYSTAFF SHAPE OF YOU AT GUYAD R & Wh This bitch has a head of classic proportions, good muzzle to skull ratio, has depth to the skull without an exaggerated apple dome. She has well-developed cheek bumps. The white strip on her head creates an illusion beside her distinct stop, this is why we check things hands on. She has a bit of strength to her underjaw. She is a bitch of substance, good bone, nothing looks out of place. She has a shapely body, a bit of width front and rear, spring of rib and definition at the loin. She has adequate bend of stifle and this is something that was discussed with her handler who can over stretch her. At times perhaps a shorter or slower stride on the move is needed (the joy of being a tall handler) she can look like her movement is converging. This was a quality class to win, to me she looks like a Stafford all day long and she was a very worthy recipient of BEST BITCH and BEST IN SHOW.

2nd Banner’s GEORDIESTAFF HADAWAY PET Br & Wh My notes say ooft, I gave a little squeal inside on seeing this bitch and on examination she met my expectations. Her head is stunning, good proportions, strong clean muzzle – you can tell she is a bitch, dark round eye and rose ear enhance her expression. She has substance, good lay back of shoulder. Her body is shapely with spring of rib and depth of brisket. She has a backend to match creating balance. She was in the throes of a phantom, so condition wasn’t 100% but she showed herself off and moved with front extension and drive from the rear. Good luck with her, one to watch. 1st and 2nd were shorter caste than 3rd, an observation not a criticism, this class took a bit of consideration.

3rd Smith’s TILLCARR FIRE PHEONIX AT TROYSTAFF

Res Matthew’s JANJOMA HEARTS DESIRE

Yearling Bitch (4,1abs)

1st Duncan’s RHEBELSTAFF SWEET THING Bl Br & Wh At the smaller end of the standard but still looks like she is a strong package with enough substance. Good head proportions with adequate length of muzzle, she has a neat rose ear and is tight around the lip. Like her litter brother she has plenty behind the collar, she is short coupled and compact, she has depth of brisket, spring or rib and a well developed back end. She has a correct tail set. She moved true with a bit of width at her rear. Handled to advantage and in excellent condition. Won over 1st on overall balance.

2nd O’ Malley’s THEBILECIOUS TE AMO R Feminine looking bitch with a clean enough head. Her rose ears which she used well enhanced her expression. There was more of her all over than the 1st and she was longer caste. Has forechest, depth to brisket and length to rib. Held a level topline on the move and was moved at the correct pace.

3rd Beckwith’s BULLRED LADY HUNTSMEN

Novice bitch (10,4abs)

1st Thomas’ BIGGLESWICK MIND YOUR BACK R & W Won this class by virtue of her head and maturity. Rich red with a clean head and no excess flesh. Good muzzle to skull ratio, tight lip and well-developed cheek muscles and rose ear. She has a muscular neck. Stands on straight legs with the desired turn out at the feet. Had depth of chest and spring of rib. I would prefer a bit more width to front but her front and rear were in sync on the move. Still a youngster with more maturing to come.

2nd Owen’s TAGSTANE AMBER WHISKY see 1st Minor puppy bitch

3rd Smith’s TILLCARR FIRE PHEONIX AT TROYSTAFF

Res Brown’s ALMOSTAFFS KAILANI’S KISS AT NORTHSIRIUS

Post Graduate Bitch (5, 1abs)

1st Bennett’s SCIPELEI AGAINST ALL ODDS Bl Br & Wh Won the class on overall balance, substance and ring presence. Head of good proportions, no extra flesh. Dark round eye and thin rose ear enhancing expression. Open nares. In fit condition but perhaps just edging on lean. Has depth of brisket, spring of rib, is short coupled, has a well developed back end and adequate bend of stifle. Moved out well with enthusiasm for her handler.

2nd Harkin & Jones’ KAMARISTAFF ROYAL DUCHESS Bl Br This bitch likes free standing, she loves to show on her terms, not quite awkward and not quite diva. Her coat and physical condition is top notch. I have judged her before as a minor puppy and here we have her with a bit of maturity. She has a typical Stafford head yet retains femininity. She has big teeth. She is at the taller end of the standard than 1st but is balanced. Needed to be moved a couple of times to see her at her best. When freestanding you see her at her best, the essentials are all there.

3rd Seaton’s DAISY DUKE MOONCAKE VON DER RENNSTADT (IMP DEU)

Res Jamieson-Bramley’s TYNEVIEW ALFISSIMO

Limit Bitch (2)

1st Smith’s DRINGSHAWS GIRL ON FIRE R & W this is an eye-catching bitch and I had a surprise when I looked in the catalogue, I thought I hadn’t seen her before, today I saw a different bitch. She showed herself to advantage, she was looking for her wee family members which I think the handler felt was distracting her but to be honest you saw her in all her glory. Alert, ears up, head up, she was taut with enthusiasm which showed her excellent condition! Handlers sometimes just need to let the dogs be and move, when they are almost at obedience heel you don’t always see their best. She is a shapely bitch body wise with a bit of width to her front, she is well off for bone and no weakness at the pastern. Her hams are well developed. Her head is definitely a virtue, she had a bit more strength to muzzle than 2nd. Large open nares, dark round eyes and good pigmentation finished a very pleasing picture. RESERVE BEST BITCH. Beaten by the Best Dog for RBIS who was more compact and shorter in coupling.

2nd Clark’s QUINE ON SGOR GAOITH FOR ALBAMADRA R & W This bitch had one of her offspring with her and you wouldn’t have known she had a litter, well done in getting her back in shape. This is an honest Stafford, looks like a Stafford, behaves like a Stafford. Ok so her ears aren’t her fortune but looking beyond that she has a head of good proportions, no excess flesh and tight around the lip. A bit more strength to the muzzle would do no harm but she is typey. She was more compact than first. Good width to front, standing on well boned legs with the desired turn out of feet. She has depth of brisket and spring of rib, she holds her topline on the move, moving true, her hams aren’t as well defined as her pre puppy days but that will come.

Open Bitch (6, 2abs)

1st Howard’s MATRIXSTAFFS SKY DANCER Bl Br & Wh This bitch pushed hard in the line-up, she has a bit of panache. In excellent condition but showing slight maternal/phantom evidence but that’s the challenge with bitches. Stronger headed bitch and she is so well knit that that has to be credited. Her head isn’t overdone despite being strong and she has a bit of length to her muzzle which is blunt. She has a dark round eye and her ears enhance her expression. She was handled to advantage and moved at the correct speed to show her drive from the rear. Won over 2nd on overall balance and more width to front.

2nd McPhail’s BETHALEESE’S ICE’N A’SLICE FOR SCORGUIE Wh & R Expertly handled bringing out the best of the bitch. This bitch was shown in solid condition. It’s great to see white and reds with excellent pigmentation especially around the eye and on the gum, it’s the little things that make me smile. The bitch has a well-proportioned head with a bit of length to the muzzle, she has a strong underjaw in depth and width. She has an adequate depth of stop and her dark round eye enhances her expression. She has a muscular neck, straight well boned legs and always looks ready to spring into action and is alert and keen on the move. She has spring of rib and depth of brisket.

3rd Robinson & Robinson-Cox HAMASON BELLE O’THE BALL R & Wh

Veteran bitch (3, 1 abs)

1st Thomas’ BIGGLESWICK SHE DEVIL R & W Last time I judged this bitch she was in yearling coming up for 6 years ago and I awarded her RBB. Time has been kind and she certainly doesn’t present as an old girl. She has a head of classic proportions which has no extra flesh, pronounced cheek muscles, dark round eyes and rose ears enhance her expression. Body wise she has a straight front, good layback of shoulder, depth of brisket, spring of rib, she is in good physical body shape. Moved out well. Beaten by her sire for BEST VETERAN.

2nd Thomas’ BIGGLESWICK YIN YANG Bl Br and silver tips. I always get a bit emotional with the oldies in their twilight time. This old girl put her best foot forward and although she is losing a bit of condition due to age you can still see her virtues. Her head still has some muscularity, is of good proportion, is clean around the muzzle and the dark round eye looks even more appealing with an outline of silver. She is a short coupled, compact bitch with spring of rib. Her coat is short and close. She moved with purpose at her speed.

Championship ShowSunday 27th October 2024

Report of Bitch Judge Ken Meneer

To start my report, I would like to thank the North Eastern club for affording me the privilege of judging the Bitches at your Championship show. I thoroughly enjoyed my day. My thanks also go to Paul Igo, Tommy Hall, and Garry Reynolds for keeping the ring running smoothly.

Without exhibitors, there is no show, so thank you to all those exhibitors that gave me the opportunity to assess your charges, and except for one instance, accepted my decisions graciously. Judging is subjective and influenced by each judge’s understanding of the written breed standard. Today I found most of the classes very competitive and it was down to my preferences in certain areas when class placings were decided.

I was pleased with my final lineup, who were all of good type with an equal amount of bull and terrier. There was also a bit of spark in some of them but please remember that whilst your dog may be squaring up to another this could affect the dog that is being individually assessed. Remember ring etiquette.

Today, apart from a few untidy mouths that I wasn’t overly concerned with, there were no serious mouth problems. I did not encounter any closed nostrils or any breathing issues.

Since my last judging, I noticed improvements in feet, tail sets, and toplines, indicating that the breeds females young and adult are overall in good shape. However, I was disappointed by the presence of thick fleshy lips which can be corrected through selective breeding, and a lack of muscle tone, that can be addressed with proper diet and exercise. It’s disheartening to see a visually striking dog and then upon examination find it to be soft and not in hard condition. It can make a significant difference especially in adults when decisions are made.

Results:

MPB (15, 1abs)

What a super class of happy minor puppies. It was a joy to see. If this is the future generation coming through, I don’t think we have too many problems. I think we will see some great competition in the future from the girls in this class and I will watch with interest.

1st. Hirst & Bibby’s “Taraiel Black Storm” at just under 7-month-old this bl/br who was shown in good condition for her age, excelled in type and was so very well balanced. She has good strength all round and her head development which is in keeping with her body is going in the right direction. Good topline and tail set. Moved well for her age.

2nd. Ward’s “Berrystock Astute Of Zabaretts” This 7 month old bl/br with white on chest certainly made her lady handler work for her place. Her head is shaping nicely and is complimented by tidy ears and round eyes. Body wise she has a good front and is a nice size. Her rear end is developing nicely and when settled moved ok.

3rd. Rogers “Berrystock Agamemnon” bl/br who is litter sister to 2nd. Very similar head shape to her sister with a good length of muzzle, nice ears and round eyes. Like her sister she has decent feet and good bone. She is nice and compact and enjoyed her time in ring.

Res. Funnell’s “Powerpack Euphoria”.

VHC. Harkin & Jones “Kamaristaff Royal Duchess”.

PB (12, 1Abs)

1st. Taylor & Coombes “Fredbur GoGo Yubari At Niatona”. This 11-month-old bl/br with white is very balanced with a good amount of daylight underneath that allows her to move with drive and hold her topline. Her head has a bit to come yet, but it is developing well and comprises of dark round eyes and neat ears. Length of muzzle is good with a strong underjaw. Her front, body and rear end are developing as they should with no exaggerations. BPB & BOSPIS.

2nd. Bowman’s “Sikaistaff Lil Monster At Kamiflo”. At just over 9 months this bl/br is very promising. She is of standard size with a head of correct proportions. Nice round eyes and a good length of muzzle, tidy ears and developing cheek muscles complement her. She has good bone and stands on good feet. Comprising of a good bend of stifle her backend is developing nicely, and she moved well for her age.

3rd. Miller’s “Skyland Ryoko”. This 9-month-old standard size girl was very balanced with a good front. She a possesses a nice feminine head with good length of muzzle distinct stop and decent underjaw. Her body is developing nicely as is her backend. She moved ok for her age.

Res. Jones “Kamaristaffs Royal Legacy”.

VHC. Yates “Keepastaff Lock And Load At Zakdan”JW.

JB (10) Super class of females.

1st Hammonds “Ch. Hammystaff Hot Love JW”. Much has been wrote about this r/w young bitch much of which I would agree with. Whilst her head is of good strength, it still retains her femininity and is complimented by thin correctly set ears, dark round eyes set correctly and a good length of muzzle. She is true in front and has depth of brisket. Her body is in great condition and houses a good spring of rib. She is well off for bone and stands on tight feet. Her back end leaves nothing to be desired. Her movement wasn’t the best today but once settled she showed me enough to win this class.

2nd. Haworth’s “Aixit Rosie Bluebell”. A smart bl/br/w of standard size that moved very well. She has a well-shaped head with distinct stop, a good strong muzzle, decent lips and ok underjaw. Round eyes set straight ahead and good cheek muscles. Body wise she is in good condition stands on well boned legs and good feet. Her front is true with a decent width of chest. She has enough strength on the backend for her size and has a decent bend of stifle.

3rd. Owen’s “Tagstone Forever Fuchsia”. A strong headed standard sized bl/br/w girl. Her head is of good shape and is complimented by small rose ears, a defined stop, pronounced cheek muscles and length of muzzle. She is well off for bone & substance and has a good spring of rib. Her back end is strong with a decent bend of stifle and was well let down at the hocks. She moved well and held her topline.

Res. Hunter’s “Grizzlystaff’s Stand By Me”.

VHC. Mason’s “Magellason Tipsey Tilly”.

YB (7, 3abs) Although this class was small, all 4 exhibits were of good quality.

1st. Smith’s “Dringshaws Girl On Fire”. A Fawn/Wh that fits into the standard very well. Her head is clean and balances out with her body and benefits from neat ears, dark round eyes and very good pigmentation which gives her a pleasing expression. She has a good front and rear end, well off for bone and stands on tight feet. A strong neck and an excellent body shape which is short coupled add to the overall picture.

2nd. Gallagher’s “Alshancorn Says Who JW”. bL/br/w girl who possesses a good clean head with a strong muzzle. Her eyes are dark and round and she has a distinct stop and pronounced cheek muscles. Body wise she is very square and fits the standard well. Her straight front, deep brisket and spring of rib all add to a pleasing picture. Her head is well shaped with neat ears, dark eyes, distinct stop and good cheek muscles. Good length of muzzle and decent underjaw complete the picture. True in front and has enough depth of brisket. LB (13, 3Abs) Another super class of girls.

1st. Land’s “Zivannaz No Stopping Me Now At Winzack”. Well, this this red girl gave me a surprise. Her elegance, balance and overall picture drew me in. Her very feminine but strong head that is in total balance with her body includes well set thin rose ears, dark round eyes, a strong muzzle of good size and good underjaw. She is not exaggerated in any dept with her front well in keeping with the rest of her. Depth of brisket, spring of rib, nice feet and strong pasterns all enhance the picture. Her backend is as required with good muscle definition and she is well let down at the hocks. She moved gracefully but with power and held her topline whilst moving. Thank you for bringing her. My CC winner today and on the referee’s decision RBIS!

2nd. Rowe & South’s “Illori Constellation JW”. Very nice bl/br girl shown in fit condition that I had judged when she was a puppy. She has come on very well and has still retained a strong but feminine head that includes a neat pair of thin ears, round eyes set wide apart, distinct stop and decent underjaw. Her body has good shape and benefits from a good width to her chest, good spring of rib, short coupling and nice tuck up. Her rear end is firm with good muscle definition, adequate bend of stifle and well let down hocks.

3rd. Rogers & Daly-Lees “Berrystock Best Kept Secret”. A very nice bl/br/w that has a really good head containing neat rose ears, dark eyes set wide apart, good cheek muscles and underjaw. OB (6) A class that was small in numbers but high in quality.

1st. Shipp’s “Ch Delacour Sweetest Taboo For Idyllicstaff JW”. Black and white pied who was well up on her toes. A strong headpiece that portrays a wicked expression but still retains femininity. Nice clean muzzle with decent lips.. Dark round eyes, good ear carriage and pronounced cheek muscles contribute to her expression. Her broad front and good depth of brisket present a very pleasing front view. Her body is as the standard asks for and with a strong backend, good bend of stifle and well let down hocks her profile ain’t bad either. She was shown in excellent condition Her movement which is done at 100mph keeps you guessing but I saw enough for her to warrant the RCC.

2nd. Parker’s “ Ch Elitebull Mojito At Nettleworth”. A very nice bl/br of good type with a very good head. She has dark round eyes, neat ears, distinct stop and strong muzzle and underjaw. With width to her chest, a deep brisket, good spring of rib and nicely shaped body she paints a nice picture of strength. She is up in the pasterns with neat feet. A well-defined rear end showed her strength and she used this when moving.

A very nice girl!

3rd. Crawford & Wilson’s “Ch Northstaff Bay Bomber for Crowstaff JW”. Another quality bl/br that fits the standard like a glove. Her head that is in total balance with her body includes neat rose ears, dark eyes and a very feminine expression. A straight front, neat feet, good pasterns, nice tuck up and level topline all add to the picture of health. She is also blessed with a sound backend. Moved positively with drive that needed very little effort on her part.

Res. Ibsen’s “DK/SW/HUN/INT Ch Keepastaff New Player Indy”.

VHC. Wall’s “Ch Goldwyn Shes The One”.

VB (10, 3Abs) Always a pleasure to judge the veterans.

1st. Johnson’s “Ch Tillcarr Baptism Of Fire JW”. Nice to see this girl back in the ring strutting her stuff. She still retains an excellent expression that is born out of a broad skull, well set neat ears, dark eyes set wide apart and a strong underjaw. Her body is just returning to full fitness but the outline is still there and her balance is second to none. Moved well. Thank you for bringing her. BOSVIS!

2nd. Stanway’s “Ch Mosstrooper Making Mischief At Waystaff JW”. At almost 12 years old this r/w belies her age. She still retains a very nice head that has dark round eyes, a distinct stop and decent underjaw. Her body is still in good shape and condition and there is still power in the rear quarters. Moved well.

3rd. Funnells “Powerpack Alura Finvarra JW”. A nice 7 year old bl/br with a good head piece with dark eyes and neat ears that gave her a nice expression. She has a decent straight front , neat feet and good bone. She moved well and held her topline and tail correctly.

Limit Show – 25th February 2024

Judge – Clare Ryan (Rubericla)

2023

Open Show – 18th June 2023

Judge – Mrs Teri Owen (Tagstane)

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the committee for inviting me to judge their open show. It was a great privilege and one I thoroughly enjoyed. From arrival to the end of the day, everyone was friendly and accommodating to myself and my husband. The hospitality was fabulous and the real star of the day was Laureen William’s pie…..delicious!

With Border Union being the day before, I appreciate the effort by all who attended and for accepting my decisions in a friendly & sporting manner.
I must make special mention to my judge’s gift. It’s the most thoughtful one I have received and one I will cherish – thank you.

Gillian Griffiths and Paul Igo were my ring stewards. A big thank you to them for keeping the ring moving efficiently and at pace, which is the way I like it.

Although the entry wasn’t the biggest the quality of dogs was consistent throughout, especially the youngsters. Many have lots of potential and all going well for them, a very bright future.
There was less than a handful of mouth issues. Some tight canines, level and undershot mouths were present but nothing that would cause the dog any health issues. My main winners all had a complete scissors bite therefore I will not mention mouths in my critiques.
The majority of the dogs were in excellent condition. There was only a small number who were in hard condition but with the extremely hot weather we have experienced over the UK for several weeks, I did not hold this against the others. Our dog’s safety in this heat is more important. It was another hot day, all the dogs coped and gave no concerns for their health or safety. With the talk lately of breathing problems within the breed, I certainly did not witness any today.

Minor Puppy Dog (3,1)

  1. Mr & Mrs Millar – Skyland Imperial. B/B 8mths old. Standard dog of type with a pleasing head shape and expression with a clean muzzle and tight lipped. Straight front, tight feet, spring of rib is appropriate for age and size. Level topline, short coupled. Moved and handled well.
  2. Mr & Mr Howard – Matrixstaff Knight Star. B/B 6mths old. Another dog of type. He is already of good size, full of substance and bone for one so young. He has a strong head with a keen expression, neat ears, straight front, tight feet, deep brisket and good spring of rib, level topline when stacked and good angulation. His movement was a little loose, but it was clear to see he is still very much a baby. Time is on his side and I’m sure he will mature into a fine dog.

Puppy Dog (3)

  1. McVay & Hughes – Torkavi Night Fury. 9mth old, strong B/B puppy. Compact, standard dog with a strong head which is deep and broad. He has a distinct stop, short foreface, dark eyes, and neat ears which all lead to an inquisitive and slightly cheeky expression. He has a straight front, good bone, tight well-padded feet, well laid-back shoulders, short coupled, well sprung ribs, and deep brisket. He has a level topline, strong well-defined hindquarters and correct tail carriage. He was a tad naughty on the move but once he settled, I saw enough to see he moved correctly and with power …….and then he went back to being naughty. I must be honest he made me smile more than once. He is in super fit condition and rock hard. As long as he doesn’t get much stronger, I think he’ll have a bright future and you’ll have lots of fun with him. BPD & BPIS
  2. Mr & Mrs Carr – Tropical Red Rum at Almostaffs. 10ths old Red dog. Another young dog with a cracking head with good strength and a lovely dark mask which enhanced his expression. He has a straight front, good feet, good bone, short coupled, level topline which he held on the move, strong hindquarters and coat in nice condition. Moved well. Another young dog I feel has potential.
  3. Hammond & Moody – Rachamo’s The Few. B/B 10mth old. This dog has a nice shape and outline. He has dark eyes, a straight front with a level topline. His head wasn’t as developed as the other two dogs however time is on his side.

Junior Dog (1)

He has a strong head which is short, deep through with a broad skull, distinct stop, short foreface, clean muzzle, dark eyes with a keen expression. He is a balanced dog with clean lines, straight front with good bone and tight feet. Short coupled, good depth of brisket. Level topline which he held on the move, correct angulation, correct tailset and moved well. Would’ve liked a little more rib but this will hopefully come with age, and it’ll finish him of nicely. His coat was gleaming. Promising young dog with a lot of potential. BD & BOS

Yearling Dog (1)

  1. Mr & Mrs Reynolds – Niatona Wreck it Ralph. I judged this red and white dog when he was only 8mths old and a felt with some ringcraft he’d learn to show off his qualities and he definitely does that now. He has matured into a cracking dog with plenty of substance. He has a strong head with dark eyes, excellent pigmentation, pronounced cheek muscles and a fierce expression. He has a straight front, correct depth of brisket, excellent spring of rib and short coupled. He has a level topline, strong hindquarters and correct tail carriage. In excellent condition and well-muscled. It was a very close decision between him and BD. This dog has more to give, and I look forward to watching with interest. RBD

Straight front, good bone, good feet, wide front, perfectly deep brisket with well sprung ribs and no looseness at the elbows. He has a level topline which he held on the move. He has correct angulation, strong hindquarters, and correct tail carriage.

Minor Puppy Bitch (5,3)

Standard size bitch with a pleasing head and expression. Straight front, neat feet, level topline, short coupled, good angulation and moved and handled well.
  2. Mr & Mrs Howard – Matrixstaffs Star Dancer. 6mth old B/b, litter sister to 2nd in MPD with many similar qualities. She is an all over stronger bitch than 1st . Her head is strong yet feminine with dark eyes and neat ears. She has a straight front, well padded feet, ample bone for age, good spring of rib, level topline and good angulation. I believe these siblings have a lot of potential but just need time to tighten up and grow into themselves.

Puppy Bitch (1)

  1. Rogers & Rogers & Daly-Lees – Berrystock Best Kept Secret. B/B, 11mth old bitch of type. This is a cracking puppy who is the full package for her age. Her expression was alert and she looked at me as though she was expecting me to throw her favourite toy. She has a straight front, good bone, well-padded feet which are tight enough, good depth of brisket and well sprung ribs. Novice Bitch (3,1)

  1. Mr Clark – Quine on Sgor Gaoith. Red with white chest and a black mask. Her pigmentation is excellent. She has a strong head which clean and well defined. It’s a shame her ears don’t sit neater as that would make all the difference. She has a straight front, tight well-padded feet, good spring of rib and deep brisket. She is well balanced with a straight front, good strong bone, well-padded tight feet, strong neck, shoulders well laid back, deep brisket, level topline, correct angulation, hard and well-defined hindquarters, correct tail carriage and moved with purpose. I was truly splitting hairs for Best Bitch which she missed out as I would’ve liked a tiny bit more spring of rib. I liked this bitch a lot and I believe she has massive potential. 3. Mr & Mrs Williams – Jodel’s Isadora. R&W bitch who I’ve judged before, and she is still quality. She is a strong bitch with an excellent head shape. Dark eyes with dark pigmentation which gave her an excellent expression. She has a straight front, tight well-padded feet, short coupled, deep brisket, level topline, strong hindquarters, tight and short coat. Moved well.
